The Wurzels Fan Clubs

The Wurzels Archives

Most 'pop' groups from the 1960s onwards had 'fan clubs' of some description - some small, some large, some 'official' and others set up unofficially by keen admirers of their favourite band. Adge Cutler & The Wurzels, and later The Wurzels, were no exception. Details of these clubs are scarce and our knowledge mainly relies on members having kept a tight hold of their precious newsletters.

Adge Cutler & The Wurzels Fan Club

Very little is known about Adge's fan club - it gets no mention on any record sleeves or show programmes and so far all we have is a set of eight Fan Club letters sent out in 1970/71. The club was run at that time by a Pat Baxter of Gloucestershire. Many thanks to 'Farmer John' Clarke for providing these copies for the archives.

'The Wurzels Fan Club'

The Wurzels' own official fan club was started in in 1975 but really took off in 1976 following the success of their Combine Harvester single. Several ladies took on the onerous task of being fan club secretary over the years, over-all control being with John Miles, the band's manger. The most exciting time for being a fan club member was in 1978 when the names of members of the club were put in a hat and those lucky enough to be drawn were invited to attend the live recording of the LP  'I'll Never Get A Scrumpy Here'. It is unclear at the moment when the club was disbanded.

Below are a selection of the regular newsletters sent out to club members, kindly donated by Elizabeth Beck.

Unofficial Fan Clubs

Over the years there have been several 'unofficial' fan clubs set up by fans looking for those of a similar interest to exchange information or meet up at gigs - most, if not all, have disappeared into oblivion.

One such group was 'The Adge Cutler Appreciation Society': By all accounts it accumulated a total membership in single figures - and below is one the few remaining letters the secretary sent out upon joining - together with a free photo!
