Adge Cutler & The Wurzels

"SCRUMPY & WESTERN"   EP

Pill Pill / Twice Daily / Hark At 'Ee Jacko / Drink Up Thy Zider

This was the second 7" 45rpm vinyl record (an EP - extended player - rather than a traditional single as it contained 4 tracks) by Adge Cutler & The Wurzels, released on 1st February 1967. It was issued on the Columbia EMI record label in mono, catalogue number SEG8525.

The Band Line-up:

At the time of both the recording and release of this single the Wurzels supporting Adge were Reg Quantrill, Reg Chant, John Macey and Brian Walker.

The Tracks:

The tracks on this EP came from the very first commercial recording session made by Adge Cutler & The Wurzels for their first album - self titled. It was recorded in front of an audience in the upstairs room of the Royal Oak pub, Nailsea, in Zummerzet (as it says on the album cover!), on the 2nd November 1966. Adge's debut single 'Drink Up Thy Zider' was also taken from this recording session. All four tracks were written by Adge Cutler - more information on them can be found on the album's webpage.

In their March 1967 edition the 'Gramophone Magazine' reported

Two records made ‘live’ in public houses and released last month are presumably due for a share of notoriety. Both are vigorous, and both, in a positive, defiant way, are dreadful. Adge Cutler occupies the four tracks on the EP Columbia SEG 8525, made at a pub in Somerset. One of them is his near-hit Drink up thy Zider. The others are Pill, Pill / Twice Daily / Hark at ‘ee Jacko, red faced, bristly-chinned stuff generously sprinkled with heavy, gumbooted innuendo.

Only a couple of organised photo-shoots were taken of the band before Brian Walker left in early 1967. This promo photograph comes from a late 1966 session at Coates Cider Factory in Nailsea. From left to right John Macey, Brian Walker, Adge Cutler and Reg Quantrill. For some reason Reg Chant wasn't included in this photo.

Disc and Label Variations:

This EP (extended player) was released on the standard Columbia EMI label on 1st February 1967. This was the only EP released by Adge Cutler & The Wurzels and also their only 7" picture sleeve issued in the UK.

For collectors this is an interesting item. It sold in relatively good numbers but there are many variations in the label to be found. This is most unusual - two variations can sometimes to be found (as on some of Adge's albums where it was repressed and needed another run of labels made up) but in this case at least 16 variations can be found - some to do with the company label 'blanks' and then several variations where the layout of the words was subtly different.

The examples below and the associated statistics are taken from the collection of Professor Wurzel and represent what a collector should expect to find. For more information on references to matrix information (including information on acetates), vinyl tax codes , album sleeves, singles sleeves, and Columbia album labels, then refer to the Vinyl Collecting Guides on the main menu.

All examples have the embossed tax code 'KT' (indicating a pre-November 23rd 1968 pressing) and on both sides the standard 'sold in UK...' message across the centre of the label (indicating a pre-June 1969 pressing) - with the exception of image 16. The tax code 'KT' is  found on the run-off on both sides of the record.

The rim text has the out-of-date 'Columbia Graphophone Co. Ltd' credit and 'MADE IN Gt. BRITAIN'.

This and the next example are the only copies where the track credits are printed as (1) and (2) - all others have the numbers circled.

The rim text has the out-of-date 'Columbia Graphophone Co. Ltd' credit and 'MADE IN Gt. BRITAIN'.

Most unusually the 'sold in UK' text on side 1 is completely missing.

The rim text has 'The Gramophone Co. Ltd' credit and 'MADE IN Gt. BRITAIN'. All further examples have this phrase fully capitalised.

This example is the same as the previous except that the SEG8525 information and the 2 for side 2 are offset to the right on this one. This example is also a solid centre version.

As can be seen by the sticker this is a 'factory sample' removed from the production line at random to carry out quality checks on it. This example has a larger font size for the SEG8252 text - this also repeats on Nos. 2,6,7 and 12).

This example if one of three that have the unusual ampersand used (refer back to earlier closeup images at the start of this section).

Effectively the same as the previous this example except that the SEG8525 information on side 2 is offset to the right.

This example is the same as the previous except that the 2 on side 2 is very very slightly offset to the right. Additionally this is of course a pronged centre example.

Record Transcript:

This EP was put together before the album was released. The inter-track chat was all taken from the live recording session but some interesting editing was carried out, it ending up being subtly different from the album release. The chat on the EP is shown in the centre column. The right-hand column explains how it sat within the album release.

Record Sleeve Notes:

The text on the back of the picture-sleeve gave early Wurzel fans a quick biography - these words are not given an author but were used many years later in the 1977 album ' The Very Best Of Adge Cutler' when they were credited to Martin Ross and Bob Barratt.

The sleeve was put together by Garrod and Lofthouse (who also produced the sleeves for all Adge's albums) in February 1967 as indicated in the small print at the bottom of the sleeve - GL 6702 TP.
