The Wurzels

"I Hate J.R." b/w "I Love J.R."

This was the tenth 7" 45rpm vinyl single released by The Wurzels after Adge Cutler's death. It was released on 4th April 1980 John Miles record label, catalogue number JM1001

  Song Lyrics

The Band:

At the time of the recording of this single The Wurzels consisted of Pete Budd, Tommy Banner and Tony Baylis, all of who had been supporting Adge Cutler at the time of his death in 1974.

The Tracks:

I Hate J.R. - the 'A' side on this single - and I Love JR were both new and previously unreleased tracks. They were both studio recordings made at a studio in Leicester on March 28th 1980 - the recording to release taking only 8 days. The band were quoted in their fan club letter that month as hoping to get into the Guinness Book Of Records for this speedy process!

Disc and Label Variations:

The examples below are taken from the collection of Professor Wurzel and represent what a collector should expect to find. Generally The Wurzels' vinyl single releases from 1975 onwards tended to have an initial pressing run and were then taken off the catalogue. Matrix, Mother and Stamper codes were still used on the vinyl and the information centred around Adge's 1960's recordings that can be found on the Main Menu under 'Vinyl Collecting Guides' remains relevant (with minor changes between different record labels).

"I Hate J.R." b/w "I Love J.R." - Song Lyrics

  • Side 1    I Hate J.R.
  • (Chorus)
    ‘I hate J.R’
I'm hanging the sign on the back of my car
    Saying ‘I hate J.R’
Cos me and young Dusty are better by far
    ‘I hate J.R’
  • Well he lives in a palace, way down there in Dallas
Where ev’ry one's keeping the score
They're all taking breakfast, way down there in Texas
And that makes me hate him still more
  • It's not that I'm worried, I've never been hurried
To ride in his big Chevorolet
But his ten-gallon hat, well I sure would like that
I'd have ladies around I all day
  • (Repeat Chorus)
  • Well there's news that is makin’, and hearts that is breakin’
It's a wonder he ever survives
And when he starts lyin’, and babies start cryin’
Well I wouldn't be one of his wives
  • Now he's wheelin’ and dealin’, with no kind of feelin’
Sue Ellen just waits in the wings
And soon she gets lusty, and runs to her Dusty
Who got her all tied up in rings
  • (Repeat Chorus)
  • [Spoken]
Hey J.R. What've you got that I ain't got eh? Ho, ho. Ah, ah - No wonder Sue Ellen was looking happy down at breakfast morning then. Will I jump in the where? Course I will J.R, anything you say boy
  • ‘I hate J.R’
I'm hanging the sign on the back of my car
    Saying ‘I hate J.R’
Cos me and young Dusty wherever you are
    ‘I hate J.R’
  • (Repeat x 2)
  • [Fade out]
  • Side 2     I Love JR
  • Now you all heard of Dallas and its oil cos you seen it on the telly
That's where that famous family live, Jock Ewing and Miss Ellie
There's Bobby, Pam and Baby John and Lucy the poisoned gnome
Sue Ellen's married to big JR who's hardly ever home
His briefcase filled with dollar bills and a lady on each arm
With his Stetson and dark glasses man, he thinks he's full of charm
A different suit for every day and he drives a big flash car
The only cat that this can be is Southfork's big JR
  • (Chorus)
Hey JR, we love you as you are
Hey JR, you're a superstar and we love you the way you are
    Ah sure do JR boy!
  • JR was born down Texas, on a big farm way down South
They say there everything is big, so that explains his mouth
He buys his women and buys up oil, once tried to buy LA
He wants to buy an island, but that island is UK!
He's heard there's oil in Britain, and he's gonna stake a claim
When he sees the boob he's made he'll sure to pass the blame
Cos then he'll still be gushing, with all his normal zest
Cos JR is the smoothest fastest talking in the West
  • (Repeat chorus)
  • He has a boy called Baby John and he keeps him locked away
In an upstairs room he has to live and he don't come out to play
Can he be a little monster taking over from his Dad
JR you're still the best the world has ever had (that's my boy)
Though you're always late for breakfast, and you never eat a thing
You're the greatest of the Ewings JR, you sure are the King
Some folks love you, and others hate you, and all that you portray
But they'd all like to be JR if only for a day
  • (Repeat chorus twice)
  • JR we sure love you
